The city was founded by Ala Singh in 1763, famous for its traditional Patiala shahi turban, Pranda, Patiala salwar, jutti and Patiala peg. The name Patiala has been derived from the combination of two words pati means "strip of land" and 'ala' comes from the name of the founder of the city Ala singh.
