The administrative capital of Kalutara district, famous for its production of Mangosteens fruit. The name of the town has been derived from Kalu Ganga River or Black River. It is the home to the famous Kalutara Fort that has existed since the periods of Portuguese, Dutch and British rule to this region. Kalutara Bodhiya, the sacred religious site for Buddhist people, seeks to visit at least once in their lifetime.
