Belur formerly called as Beluhur or Velur is a city of Karnataka, India. In historic times, around the 11th century, it used to be the capital city of the Hoysala Empire. The city has a population of 28,754 and Kannada is the official language spoken here. Belur is an agricultural and tourist city and both these industries contribute to the growth of its economy. Coffee, pepper, ginger, sugarcane and paddy are grown in vast amounts.
